When to choose Alcove or Lynx Notch

Stay with Alcove if…

  • You want notifications and live activities in the notch, the way the iPhone does it.
  • You want lock screen widgets and custom volume and brightness pop-ups.
  • You’re on macOS 15 or later and don’t need a download manager.

Choose Lynx Notch if…

  • You want your downloads beside the camera, free with Lynx.
  • You’d like music, copied links and a file shelf there too. That’s Pro, free for 14 days when you install.
  • You’re on macOS 14 (Sonoma) and Alcove needs macOS 15.
  • You also want a download manager: up to 32 connections, resume and browser catching.

How Lynx Notch works

Download progress

A thumbnail and a progress ring sit either side of the camera. Hover and the island opens with speed, time left, pause and stop. Free with Lynx.

Links, music and a shelf

With Pro, copy a link anywhere and the notch offers to download it. Whatever’s playing shows its artwork and a visualizer, and a shelf keeps the files you drop on it.

CPU use

About 1% of one CPU core with a download running, and about 0.4% with music playing and the island closed, in our measurements on an Apple silicon MacBook Air.

How much does Alcove cost?
Alcove’s site lists $14.99 as a one-time purchase (checked October 4, 2026). Homebrew lists version 1.7.7, for macOS 15 or later.
Is there a free Alcove alternative?
Yes. boring.notch and MewNotch are free and open source; Lynx Notch shows your downloads in the notch for free with Lynx. None of them copies Alcove’s notifications exactly. All of them compared: the best notch apps for Mac.
Does Alcove work on macOS 14?
Homebrew lists macOS 15 or later for Alcove. Lynx Notch runs on macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later.
Does Alcove show download progress?
Its site doesn’t list it. Lynx Notch is built around that: your downloads’ progress beside the camera, free with Lynx.
Can I run Lynx Notch and Alcove together?
Yes, but two notch apps draw in the same space. Choose what Lynx shows (downloads only, for example) or turn it off in Lynx › Settings › Notch.
