Folx alternative for Mac

A Folx alternative for Mac.

Folx is a Mac download manager and torrent client, and its free version handles plain files well. If you need torrents or Safari support, keep it. Lynx splits every file download across up to 32 connections on its free plan (Folx Free uses 2), catches big downloads from Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc and saves video from web pages, including just part of a long one.

When to choose Folx or Lynx

Stay with Folx if…

  • You download torrents or magnet links. Folx handles both, even in its free version.
  • You use Safari and want downloads caught there.
  • You’re on an Intel Mac, or a macOS older than 11.
  • You want a scheduler for a one-time price: Folx PRO is $19.95 for one Mac.

Choose Lynx if…

  • You want every download split across up to 16 connections without paying. Folx Free uses 2.
  • You browse in Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc and want big downloads caught there.
  • You save video from web pages, or need just part of a long one: a 35-second clip is 11 MB instead of 255 MB. Folx needs a direct link or a torrent.
  • You’d like download progress in the MacBook’s notch.

Questions

More in the Help Center.

Is Folx free?
Yes. Folx’s free version splits each download into 2 threads, resumes automatically and downloads torrents and magnet links. Folx PRO ($19.95 once for one Mac, $39.95 for three) adds up to 20 threads, scheduling, speed control, torrent search, a password saver and Apple Music integration. Major upgrades are half price, or included with an optional Lifetime Upgrade Guarantee. A Mac App Store edition, Folx GO+ ($14.99), leaves out torrents (checked on September 28, 2026).
Is Folx still updated?
Yes. Version 5.34 came out on June 3, 2026, and 5.33 (February 2026) was optimized for Apple silicon. Before June 2025, the previous release was from October 2022. Its Chrome extension was last updated on May 30, 2024.
Can Folx download video from web pages?
Folx’s own FAQ says it needs a direct download link or a torrent. Lynx saves video and audio from the pages you visit, when you have the right to download them, and can download just a time range of a long video.
Does Lynx download torrents?
No. Lynx handles direct downloads, your browser’s downloads and pages with video. It doesn’t do BitTorrent or magnet links. If you need torrents, keep Folx, or see the best download managers for Mac.
Does Lynx work with Safari?
Not yet. Its extension covers Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc. From Safari, copy a download link and Lynx offers it when you switch to Lynx.
Can I use Folx and Lynx on the same Mac?
Yes. If both browser extensions are installed, let only one of them catch downloads. In Lynx, turn catching off in the extension’s popup.
Is downloading legal?
It depends on what you download and where you live. Saving your own uploads, public-domain and Creative Commons works, or anything the owner lets you download is fine. Don’t download or share content you don’t have the rights to, and respect each site’s terms.
