Is Lynx safe?
Lynx is notarized by Apple and runs entirely on your Mac. It never sends us what you download, and it has no ads or third-party trackers.
Verify
Verify your copy
Open Terminal (Applications › Utilities) and run these two commands. Neither changes anything on your Mac.
Download Lynx only from this website.
- 01
Check the installer
Run this on the file you downloaded:
shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/Lynx_1.1.2_aarch64.dmgIt should print this SHA-256 for Lynx 1.1.2:
7aeb6ac57791b011582528b9b251e19e6c22fad497c3e0b6b34bf49d9d80d1a2If yours is different, delete the file and download Lynx again from this site.
- 02
Check the installed app
Ask macOS to assess the app:
spctl -a -vv "/Applications/Lynx Download Manager.app"It should print:
/Applications/Lynx Download Manager.app: accepted source=Notarized Developer IDaccepted means macOS allows it to run, and Notarized Developer ID means Apple notarized it. If you see rejected, don’t open it.
- 03
If macOS can’t verify Lynx
Lynx 1.0.7 and later open with macOS’s usual question about an app from the internet. If macOS says it can’t verify Lynx, your copy is older or came from somewhere else. Download Lynx again, or read Lynx can’t be opened.
Your data
What Lynx sends
Lynx needs a few connections to run the trial, licences and updates. Your downloads stay private.
What leaves your Mac
- Our licence service. At launch and about once a day: an anonymous device ID, the Lynx and macOS versions, your language, the Mac model (for example “MacBook Air”) and the number of finished downloads. Only the number, never what they were.
- Our update service. Every few hours: the version you run and whether the last update installed. Updates for Lynx and its components are downloaded from our file hosting.
- The sites you download from. The same requests your browser would make, sent directly from your Mac.
What never does
- The links you paste or copy
- File names, titles or your download history
- The files you download
- What’s playing on your Mac
- Ads, third-party tracking or analytics code (the app has none)
Full details are in our privacy policy.
Browser extension
Extension permissions
The extension talks only to the Lynx app on your Mac and sends nothing to our servers. It works in Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc.
Add the extension in one click from Lynx › Settings › Browser. It comes from the Chrome Web Store. Extensions with similar names elsewhere aren’t ours.
It asks for access to
- Your downloadsSo large downloads can move to Lynx. Download in Browser Instead keeps any file in the browser.
- The sites you visitTo show the Lynx button on pages with video, and so downloads that need a sign-in also work in Lynx.
- Lynx on your MacTo open Lynx in the background when it isn’t running.
You can turn off download catching or hide the button in the extension’s popup. The extension asks for your permission before it handles any download.
